Stupid or not, that's the question

Sometimes, I really wonder whether stupid people (in my case, the customers) are really stupid, or pretending to be stupid. Damn, almost ruined my CNY mood.

Me : Thank you for calling Technical Support
Cust : Yes… I want to know RAM specs for this notebook (proceeds to tell the model). I also want to know what brand does (my company name) use?
Me : Err… we use OEM-branded RAM. So there's no specific brand as we source from a few vendors. We normally do not suggest customers to get RAM from the market as it might not be compatible with our notebook, if that's your plan.
Cust : No, no… I wanted to get your company's RAM so that it won't have any problem.
Me : Then in that case, you would probably need to contact the Spare Parts guys for more information.
Cust : But why do I need to call to the Spare Parts people when I need to upgrade my RAM? I thought I should call you guys?

Now, which part of logic does the customer don't understand? Is the customer really stupid, or pretending to be stupid?

Me : Ma'am, Technical Support provides technical information and help. If you have technical queries, we can help you with that. And also, Technical Support does not generate quotation – Sales do. (duh  )
Cust : I called to Sales earlier and they told me I need to call to Technical Support!

Lie detected! Damn desperate. Must brush off fast!

Me : Ma'am, I can only assists you with technical information. For the quotation, you would need to contact Spare Parts Sales.
Cust : Okay… in that case can you tell me what RAM i need to use for this system ?
Me : (proceeds to check and tell the customer)
Cust : Then I'll need a quote on that. Can you do a quotation for me?

Arrggghhh!!!!! Must….not….kill….customer….today!!!!!

Me : As I told you earlier, you need to contact Spare Parts Sales for quotation.
Cust : Sales are so hard to contact…. can't you do a quote for me?
Me : I'm afraid I can't. You will need to contact Sales.
Cust : ok…..
Me : Thank you for calling (and hung up – which I don't normally do to customers)

Damn. If I keep on talking with that bitch, I think I will go crazy and ruined my CNY mood. Better cut it short.

I had a similar incident where I was trying to help a friend over the phone get to a web site and (1) they only knew who to get to web sites by typing the address in the search engine box (2) their actual address bar was hidden and they couldn't get it to show up.

I just about pulled my hair out trying to get their address bar to appear. It was the kind of thing that is easily done in person, but hard to describe to someone that is computer illiterate over the phone.
