Went to Gurney Drive for dinner just now - having Laksa and Muar Chee
My wife and I were enjoying our meal when we overheard the neighbouring table saying something like this :
Sound 1 : Go and get something for your dad - we are leaving already
Sound 2 : OK…. what to buy ar??
Sound 1 : Emm… buy something fried. Hmm… there - go get Cheh Hu for your dad.
This time, I already know what Cheh Hu is
As soon as the neighbouring table left, my wife asked whether or not I heard what they said. She used to wonder why pasembur is called Cheh Hu. This time, she got the answer - the pasembur stall had Chinese words on it, and Cheh Hu actually means “Fresh Fish” instead of “Green Fish” that I initially understand. But why “Fresh Fish”, I don't know, as pasembur normally not served with fresh fish…. hmm….

2I think the Cheh Hu is referring to that brown colour seaweed thingy, called 'hai theh'. It is like raw fish.

3oic… “chnee” means fresh in hokkien mah… perhaps it's supposed to be pronounced “chnee hu”…
maybe the “hu” bit is just an expression… even tho no fish.
perhaps once upon a time pasembur really had fish in it?
