Patriotisme is not just in the song

Negaraku…
Tanah tumpahnya darahku…
Rakyat hidup, bersatu dan maju…
Rahmat bahgia, Tuhan kurniakan…
Raja kita, selamat bertakhta…

I thought I was not gonna blog about this, but truly, I think we do have to start somewhere. I was watching TV3 this morning (before fetching my wife to work), where the hosts was discussing about the matter of playing our National Anthem in cinemas, and there was one part where the guy host ask the caller (yes, it was a phone-in sort-of show) whether the caller still able to sing our National Anthem – the caller goes on belting out his rendition of Negaraku, sadly, with wrong lyrics somewhere in the middle of the song. The next caller was no different – but this guy dare to give a lame excuse – he haven't sang the National Anthem for years – the last time he sang was in Form 6 or something, like 10-15 yrs ago – and he forgots the lyric. Our government's move to instill patriotisme in it's people by having them to at least know the national anthem is a noble one, but needs a different approach. Instead of playing it at cinema at the start of every show, why not we start by playing it out, loudly, everyday at 8am and 6pm like our neighbour country, Thailand, did? If you are in Thailand at 8am or 6pm, you'll see that the people would stop whatever they are doing and standing to respect their National Anthem. If we could tolerate the Muslims with their prayers 5 times a day (no offence here – just trying to put my point thru), what is it with an additional 2 for our own National Anthem?

That's just National Anthem. I bet, out of 10 people, only 2-3 knows our 5 principles of Rukun Negara, which supposed to be the backbone of peace and freedom for us Malaysians. Prove me wrong, if you could be the first one to write out all the 5 principles of Rukun Negara in my comments section, my treat of McD sundae awaits – but then again, if you can come and personally claim it from me lah.. :)

Our Rukun Negara is:

Kepercayaan kepada Tuhan
Kesetiaan kepada Raja Dan Negara
Keluhuran Perlembagaan
Kedaulatan Undang-Undang
Kesopanan Dan Kesusilaan

Look forward to claim the Sundae from you

Agree with your point, play the anthem every morning just like our neighbours.

how do you know that the caller in the morning show is not made up? as in the TV station actually hired / asked someone to call up and peruposely sing the song wrongly?

Just what kind of target audiance does the governent want to reach by playing negaraku in the cinema? they could reach out more by putting negaraku in pirated DVD's. is it their notion that people who visits the cinema dont know how to sing the negaraku?

How many of our politicians know the lyrics to this song?

what about state anthem? i was in selangor for 5 years and dont even know what it sounds like, no one seems to play it.

this plan sounds like it comes from a politician who wants media attention.

I was having lunch yesterday. So many ppls around – young, old, teens, adults, children, chinese, malay, indian, etc. Then comes the thought, perhaps this is the best place to play “Negara KU” ?

lynnee,
try again next time :)

neeshen,
what’s the point of the tv station asking caller to make up? to embarass the caller, or to show the nation (or other countries) that Malaysians are ignorant that they don’t know their own national anthem?

EF,
:) Google is the place to look for if your brain is playing with you

Joe,
like I suggested – 8/9am and 6pm daily.
