It’s been quite some time since I last took a long break off work - the last time I did so was 2 weeks off for my wedding preparation. This year, I make it a point to utilize the long Chinese New Year break, took additional few days of leave, and go for a long break. What did I do? Well, I’ve been to many places during the past 1 week.
Chinese New Year eve: In Sg Petani
This is a tradition - every year for CNY eve, we’ll gather at my grandmother’s place for gathering. The event will depends from year to year - it can be steamboat dinner, or whole lot of barbecuing (and booze) all night long. Not forgetting the gambling starts that night as well. Baccarat was the rule of the night.
Chinese New Year day 1 & 2: In Cameron Highlands
After pai ni and angpow giving (yes, this year is the 2nd year my wife and I gives out angpow), had steamboat for lunch at my parents house, and my wife & I left for Ipoh to join my wife’s family for CNY. Transit in Ipoh for about 30 mins - Baccarat session starts while waiting for everybody to get ready for Cameron Highlands. Had steamboat at Cameron Highlands and more Baccarat after that.
We left Cameron Highlands the next afternoon for my parents house, and have barbeque (+ booze!) for dinner. More Baccarat until almost 2am.
Chinese New Year day 3 & 4: In Penang
Back to Penang after many rounds of food and booze, to see how’s Look Noon doing (he was at home all alone). Resting and vacuuming the house becomes the order of the 2 days. Was planning to go to the GSC’s cinema in Queensbay - the crowd puts us off. Besides, there’s no nice movies to watch anyway.
Chinese New Year day 5 & 6: In Kelantan
Was following my parents as they need to attend a wedding in Kelantan, so I tagged along as a driver. Been to many Thai temples in the 2 days - we’ve seen the largest Sleeping Buddha, largest Sitting Buddha, and largest Standing Buddha. So much for large things in Kelantan. Had *yee sang for dinner (didn’t follow my parents to the wedding) with wife’s uncle family.
Had keropok lekor and nasi kerabu the next day - a must-have if you go to Kelantan. Got 2 bottles of **budu back from Kelantan as well. Didn’t get to drink any ***tuak, though
Chinese New Year day 7 & 8: In Penang
Back to Penang - this time managed to catch Ghost Rider at GSC Queensbay Mall. Turns out to be quite an ok movie.
Chinese New Year day 9 : In Sg Petani
Got wedding to attend - cousin’s wedding. Had booze again at night. Luckily I left earlier during the dinner - heard from my other cousins those who never got drunk before was so drunk that everybody was dancing in front of the karaoke stage!
That sums up last week. I’ll wrote more about it - if i’m not too lazy to do so
Pictures will follow later - let me re-organise them first.
*raw fish, normally Chinese had it during Chinese New Year, believed to bring luck.
** fish sauce
*** a type of drink, made of coconut sap - alcoholic
