Blood donation: What to ask?
I’ve been to many blood donations – i can’t remember how many – that sometimes i took for granted some of the things that new blood donors would ask. I didn’t give much thought of it, as I remembered asking all the questions that I wanted to know during the first few times itself.
But when my wife asked me what questions that people normally ask during blood donation, i went blank for a moment. I couldn’t even answer her correctly as it just escapes my mind. I have to think real hard before i was able to come out with some questions that I used to ask during blood donation.
If you have never donated blood before, you are in luck, because I’m going to tell you about it.
1. Blood donation is nothing scary. The pain of the needle prick was so insignificant that you won’t even know that your blood already start flowing. Getting pricked while doing the red blood test was more pain.
2. You won’t lose that blood that you donated. In fact, new blood will be replenished within 2 days and you’ll have your full blood count again. Just treat it like recycling your blood.
3. Yes, you’ll be dizzy after the blood donation (due to low blood pressure), so don’t be a hero and jump up after the blood donation – lie down a while to ensure that your body is able to adapt to the new blood pressure before attempting anything stupid.
4. Your blood would be tested for AIDS, VDRL & hepatitis, so if you are a potential carrier, please do us a favour by not turning up for blood donation at all. You’ll waste your own time, and other people’s time as well.
5. Just make sure you have enough sleep the night before, and have breakfast. Eat light breakfast, and eat more after you have donated blood. I always loved the curry puff the Penang blood bank people brings over for treat everytime they come for blood donation drive in my company. Oh, did i mentioned hot Milo to go with it as well?
You don’t always have to wait for blood donation drive to donate your blood. You could always turn up at your local hospital’s blood bank and they’ll be happy to accommodate you
