I guessed i’ve stirred the hornet’s nest with my earlier post on Negarakuku. I think it’s best that I clarified my stance on this issue.
Firstly, I’m a Malaysian. Proudly. I never doubt it for a second that I’m proud to be a Malaysian. The fact that I have been educated in RMC where everybody was just a Putera - no Malay, no Indian, no Chinese - just a Putera. No matter what you do, or get punished - you get it in collective and there’s no differentiation. There, we joke about all the things under the sun (including sensitive ones) - but we know what the intentions were and we know what’s the limit. Like when to get the teak outdoor furniture out and in a hall.
Secondly, I’m a Buddhist. Buddha encourages his follower to stay in peace, and to do everything in moderation. Coming from a kampung, I have always been the centre of religion joke - back then, whenever they talked about Buddhism, they associate it with bald monks, and they laughed. I was mad, yes - but eventually i found out that they were just misunderstood. Now? I can laugh together with them and at the same time, tell them why it’s like that.
Yes - you may think that it’s irrelevant to the whole issue. I’m just trying to say that I’m not interested in messing with the peace that we have. I’m also not interested in mocking or laughing at anybody. It’s just that I’m asking people to look further that what’s presented to them.
Like the Malay say - “Tengok apa yang tersirat di sebalik yang tersurat” - look at what’s in between the lines ![]()
