I have commented somewhat on the Budget 2008 on my other blog. But i guessed I’d like to mention some of the points that I think i have missed.
If I read correctly, should we be expecting a safer Malaysia soon?
A sum of RM6 billion is allocated to the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) in 2008.
Great.
In line with this, the capacity and efficiency of PDRM will be enhanced with the recruitment of 60,000 new personnel over the next five years. Investigating officers and assistant investigating officers will be supplied with an additional 2,000 national cars and 1,600 laptops. In addition, 1,900 motorcycles will be provided to increase police presence. PDRM will also set up a Mobile Forensic Unit in each police contingent.
So the 1600 police officers would get a notebook each, and will have more patrol cars to patrol and make their rounds. Sounds safer. Hope it will also help the turn-around time in lodging police reports, and reduce the this-crime-doesn’t-happen-in-my-area-go-report-at-the-correct-police-station symptom.
The Government will install a larger number of closed circuit televisions linked to police control centres. To assist the private sector to enhance security at their sites, in particular at factory premises, Accelerated Capital Allowance over a year will be given for the purchase of security and surveillance equipment.
Definitely sounds a lot safer. Let’s just hope that the close circuit cameras will still be functioning after 6 months.
I’m definitely feeling positive about this, and hope that the Government won’t be wasting money this time round. And oh – don’t come suing me though – saya tak ada duit, tuan!
